This guide has been updated for Anki’s new design. The old version is not much different. For more important differences, the old version is hidden under spoilers. In the new version, you can click the “Downgrade” button in the “Profiles” window. But in terms of design, the new version is better.

Searching field

Quite a powerful tool for sorting cards is the searching field. By entering the request correctly, you can very quickly select the cards you need.

A complete list of commands can be found in the official manual (link) in the Searching section. You can quickly find it there – look for on the left. It is better to use English manual, because manuals on other lanquages are not always full.

You can combine search criteria. For example, deck:neu tag:adj, in my case, will show all words that have a tag meaning “adverbs, adjectives and pronouns” in this particular deck “neu”.

Card: 1 will show all the first cards in the entries.

You can even search by color code. Since I chose main colors for grammar, it was not difficult for me to determine the code and thus find, for example, all feminine nouns or all strong verbs. For example, # ff007f would be for feminine nouns, # 00aaff for masculine, # aa5500 for neuter, # 0055ff for strong verbs. Some words may not be included in the sample, as they were accidentally marked with another, similar color, but most of them will.

I can find also all feminine nouns by field “grammatika”: grammatika:die*

Creating new note

To add a note to an existing deck, click Notes – Add Notes. In old Version there was a separate button Add button.

A separate window similar to the editing window will open.

Some things are very important.

1. Check type of cards (green) – this is template for your new note.

2. Check Deck (orange).

It is much more convenient, if you never change Default deck and all new notes go to Default deck.

The reason is simple. Today you add a note to deck 1 and change a deck to deck 1. Tomorrow you add a note to deck 2, but you forget change a deck 1 to deck 2. Then you must search for these new notes. Good, if you remember it quickly and not after 100 new notes. Therefore I think it is better send all new notes to Default. Then find them (on the left), one more time verify, add tags.

3. Check Tags (red)

New note inherits tags from previous one.

Therefore you must

  • or check them each time
  • or add a groop of notes with the same tags
  • or add tags later by editing.

By creating of new note you can:

  • remove formatting (violet)
  • make question with cloze (only by cloze card type)
  • add audio or picture – rosa
  • record audio – yellow
  • add LaTex or html – orange

Last button is from add-on for adding audio from the records database. About this add-on – in one of the next posts.

More about Cloze card

If you enter a word that has already been, the field will be highlighted in red. You can click Show duplicates, receive a list of duplicates and edit old notes or cancel a new one.

You can also find a duplicates in Notes – Find Duplicates. This instrument can find all duplicates in all your decks.

Next – editing templates.
