The tragen family is not as numerous as the drucken / drücken family we once analyzed, however, short, similar words often get confused in the mind, especially the sweet couple Betrag or Beitrag.

Betrag or Beitrag

These words are often confused due to the fact that the meanings partially overlap.

Beitrag – consists of two parts: prefix bei and tragen (carry). Bei means that they did not just carry, but invested their part, participated, helped. Let’s remember the verb beibringen – to teach someone something, to transfer knowledge or skills.

Therefore Beitrag are contributions:
– payments, contributions, donations to the organization
– intellectual contributions in the form of articles, blog posts, radio broadcasts…
– other activity that somehow influenced events or processes

These two words are very similar, the difference is in the nuances.

vertragen – tolerate

vertragen sich – get along with each other

ertragen – endure

The first refers more to harm to health (including mental) – harmful or not harmful, can be transferred without damage or not.

The second is more about patience and nerves.

It is clear that if we are talking about abstract things (behavior, thoughts, relationships), then the meanings will overlap, that is, both words will be possible, and the choice will be determined by our attitude – we want to say that we suffered from this, or we want to say that we are sick of it and do not want to endure it anymore.

These words correspond to adjectives / adverbs

• erträglich – bearable, more often a variant with denial unerträglich
• verträglich (compatible, (good or bad) tolerable, accommodating).

erträglich clearly takes on all the meaning associated with nerves (not to endure, not to tolerate), while verträglich remains compatible with physical health and friendship between people.

Vortrag or Vertrag
