Bremerhaven attractions

Bremerhaven attractions are purely boyish fun. Port, ships, ships, port, gateway, another gateway, drawbridge…

Cuxhaven Sahlenburg
Coast of Germany. Lower Saxony and Hamburg. What to visit

There is a zoo – but very small. Observation deck (however, there is nothing to look at). Climate Museum Klimahaus (my husband was last time with a conference, not inspired) and other museums related to the sea and ships.

But the weather was a nightmare (periodic rain and wind), and the boys in our family have an absolute superiority in numbers, and the girl is quite untypical, so we set off from Cuxhaven for half a day to study the ships and the port.

History

Settlements on the banks of the Weser River existed for many centuries before the emergence of the city. The site passed from hand to hand. The Swedes began building a fortified city, but did not finish it. The settlement passed to Hanover.

By the 19th century, the Weser was becoming more and more shallow due to the accumulation of sand. Because of this, Bremen decided to buy a piece of land on the coast, where the unfinished Swedish walled city was located. This is how Bremerhaven came into being. But even this city of the 19th century you will not be able to look, since during the war most of the city was destroyed.

Bremerhaven attractions

The harbors at Bremerhaven stretch along the entire city-owned bank of the Weser River, ending in the north with docks and a large port. Most of the sights are compactly concentrated near the Museum Harbor (between the Maritime Museum and the Klimahaus).

With the port’s accessibility, the situation is more complicated: you can still reach the cruise terminal on foot from the center, but you will need a bicycle or a car to reach the observation deck at the cargo port.

There is also such an option to access even further than by car: driving along the harbors with Hafenbus and even entering the cargo terminal. But this can be a spontaneous excursion only by luck: Hafenbus goes only twice a day, three times on weekends, it is recommended to book places in advance, and you need to have a passport with you.

Every few years Bremerhaven hosts a sailing festival.

But back to town.

New harbor

New harbor: here two-thirds are occupied by new houses, and one-third by a zoo, a gateway, an old lighthouse. The new harbor ends with the Klimahaus (UFO-shaped glass building next to the sail-shaped house). There is an observation deck on a tall building in the form of a sail.

The Bremerhaven Lighthouse, or Loschen Lighthouse, from the mid-19th century, is the oldest active lighthouse on the German North Sea coast.

The steam icebreaker “Whale” sometimes rides tourists.

Museum harbor

We pass to the museum harbor. By the way, the circle around the New and Museum harbors is 4 km, which means 2 hours of walking with visiting ships, but without visiting museums.

The submarine “Wilhelm Bauer” really liked the boys. The boat was commissioned at the end of the war, but did not take part in it, but was flooded by the crew. Later raised and used by the German naval forces for training and testing.

The line of houses on the left (a street parallel to the coast and harbors) is the city’s shopping center.

On the other side there is a rescue ship and a sailing barque. The barque was closed

The Maritime Museum has been closed for renovation. The views from the observation deck were clearly not able to compensate for its cost. So we walked back around New Harbor.

Opening …

In the photographs, everything seems more or less calm, in fact, the strongest wind and the beginning of rain. The rain fully caught us on the dam. Interestingly, there were no serious clouds overhead, and the rain was absolutely horizontal. The half of the clothes on the Weser side became completely wet, and the other remained dry. The border ran vertically along the body.

The bird is called the oystercatcher, in German Austernfischer.

Cargo terminal

We move by car to the observation deck near the cargo terminal. In fact, not much can be seen from it. If you’re lucky, it will be a large container ship passing through the lock. Two tugboats are straining with him, blowing clouds of smoke.

There are two more container ship in the port.

The Swivel Bridge is the largest swing railway bridge in Germany. Turns onto a white building.

Lloyd’s shipyard is known for repairing and refitting large passenger liners. In 1881, Lloyd’s firm became the largest in the world.

The cargo terminal itself is visible very far away.
