Pongau attractions

2
1. Werfen, Werfenweng

Werfen is very picturesque – a narrow gorge with a castle – and for this reason alone deserves at least a stop along the way. The attractions are also of a high level: the ice cave (link) and the castle (link).

More details about the castle – here.
More details about the cave – here.

However, there is a problem in getting to the cave. For those with children under 6 years old, not too good health or age, I recommend replacing the cave with the one in Dachstein (see below). The castle, in principle, is also typical for Austria: Kufstein, for example, will be more interesting, like Hohensalzburg.

That is, if there are no problems with health, family and there is no Dachstein in the plan, then you can combine the cave and the castle. Or a walk along the “Sound of Music” route from the city center and the castle. If there are similar places along the route (another fortress, another cave), then simply skip it.

Near:
Werfenweng – cable car, Flying Fox (Zipline), rope park
Pfarrwerfen – open-air museum “Seven Mills”
Hüttau – copper mine (link)

2. Mühlbach

Mühlbach is part of the Hochkönig tourism region. However, since it is close to St. Johann, you might be interested in the cable car, old mine (Sunnpau, link) and Slacklinepark.

(3-4)
4. Wagrain, Flachau

Region for family hiking in the local, not too steep mountains. It is not too easy to travel from here for long excursions – Wagrain is located between the autobahns and you first need to get out of there. The detour on the Autobahn from Altenmarkt to St. Johann is faster than the way through the Wagrain.

Wagrain – cable cars, museum farm, football golf

Kleinarl further along the gorge – a rope park, Flying fox

Flachau – coaster, rope park, chairlift

8. Schladming, Ramsau, Gröbming

A large tourist region with a large number of cable cars and different types of routes, also for mountain bike. There is a tourist bus linking the separate villages.

Ramsau – cable car to Dachstein. Cabrio wagons with an open area at the top. At the top is a suspension bridge, an ice cave with sculptures.
The lower cable car station is not in the village. To go up by car, you have to pay. However, if you are using the cable car, the journey is free (remember to mark your ticket). It is still recommended to use buses.

Rittisberg – chairlift, coaster, rope park, Flyline (moving slow through the trees in a paragliding seat suspended from a pipe). link

Schladming – brewery. Cable car and chairlift, as well as other cable cars in the neighboring villages.

Gröbming – rope park, Flying fox. Link
New fun Flying coaster. First there was a fast coaster-bob on a rail, then there was a Flying fox – downhill on cables, then the pipe was lifted up and got a slow Flyline. And finally they decided to combine: the rail is at the top, the speed is high enough.

Toll road upstairs, wooden church on the cliff (link).
