German idioms about talking

Idioms are one of the most interesting and difficult parts of a foreign language. Some are briefly mentioned in textbooks but more often ignored as grammar and basic vocabulary are preferred.

I make German idioms lists with a specific meaning – in this post with meaning “taking”, that is expression ´associated with the communication process. One group of such expressions turned out to be too large. I moved it separately to the second part

Expressions that are noted as “common” in sources or that I have come across in books are printed in bold. ugs. – umgangssprachlich (colloquial)

German idioms about talking

The first two expressions are very common.

und ob (ugs.)

– And how! Naturally! Added as reinforced confirmation of what the partner doubts. It can be short, just two words, or it can appear at the beginning of a sentence as an interjection (i.e. without changing the word order)

Und ob ich das bin. Habe ich dich endlich ausfindig gemacht!

du hast gut / leicht reden (ugs.)

– It’s easy for you to say like that (you are not affected, you do not understand)
Note that there is no “zu” before “reden” in this expression.

Du hast gut reden, du hast noch Spaß.

Das ist leicht gesagt (ugs.)

– It’s easy to say

Das war leicht gesagt, denn dazu mussten die Reifen erst wieder auf die Felgen aufgezogen

Das ist leichter gesagt, als getan

– That’s easier said than done. It’s easy to talk about, but hard to do.

das wäre / ist zu viel gesagt

– it would be excessive

‘Politisch’ wäre zu viel gesagt.

jemandem auf dem Laufenden halten
auf den Laufenden bleiben

– tell someone what is currently happening, inform / know about the current status of a situation

Wir halten einander auf dem Laufenden über das Geschehen
Man muss ständig auf dem Laufenden bleiben, weil sich gerade im Energiebereich viel verändert

Circumstances of the conversation

unter vier Augen (sprechen)

– in private, only two people talk to each other

Acknowledgments

ich weiß es zu schätzen

-I appreciate it, thank you

Prompt / force a conversation

(he)raus mit der Sprache (ugs.) or simply

raus damit!

– say what you know or what is bothering you

Also mein Liebling, raus damit.

die Sprache auf etwas bringen
etwas zur Sprache bringen

– make a topic of conversation, ask a question

Ich muss noch einmal die Frage der Müllentsorgung zur Sprache bringen.

auf den Tisch kommen

– put up for discussion

Manchmal wird nur die halbe Wahrheit auf den Tisch kommen

jemandem die Zunge lösen / lockern

– loosen someone’s tongue, make someone speak

Der Wein hatte die Gesichter gerötet und die Zungen gelöst.

zur Diskussion (zur Debatte) stehen / stellen

-be / be made a topic of conversation

eigene Vorschläge werden zur Diskussion gestellt
Zur Diskussion standen die Renovierung des Deutschen Theaters

auf etwas sprechen kommen

– to talk about something

sobald man auf dieses Phänomen zu sprechen kam
