On road signs you can often see the inscription “Anlieger frei”. The dictionary will tell you that we are talking about the owner of the plot. But why not Eigentümer or Besitzer? Let’s look at the owners.
What do we earn: Lohn or Gehalt, Einkommen or Einkünfte

Eigentümer or Besitzer
Eigentümer (from eigen – belonging to someone) – owner by law. The word is more often used in a legal context.

Besitzer (from sitzen: who “sits down” on something – sich auf setzt) – someone who has control over something that is currently in his power, but not necessarily the owner (he may have rented the property from an Eigentümer). But in everyday life the word is used in the sense of Eigentümer.

Inhaber or Halter
Inhaber – It more often refers to the holder of rights to intangible assets (such as securities), to the management of a company or enterprise (not necessarily its owner), as well as to the holder of leased property.
der Inhaber der Fabrik, Wohnung
der Inhaber des Führerscheins, Kontos, Monopols, Weltrekords
Halter – the owner (keeper) of an animal or a car. It is essentially an abbreviation for Tierhalter or Fahrzeughalter.

Anlieger – the owner of the adjacent plot (including the person living there, i.e. the tenant).
Under the Anlieger frei sign, anyone who is related to the plots on this road (the owner, the tenant), as well as their clients and guests, may drive.
