Idioms in German with meaning stupidity, madness. Part 1

The dignity of a person never collects so many idioms, full of artistic images, as swearing. Opportunity to unburden himself, especially expressively stigmatizing the mental abilities of the opponent, is dear to everyone.

And native speakers of German have made a big contribution to this topic. During the collection of the material, I thought that I would drown under the number of expressions. Frequency is often difficult to determine. I didn’t take outdated ones. Found in texts and included in the popular lists are in bold.

Stupidity can be lack of intelligence, insanity, misunderstanding and error. Let’s start with the first and second, since the border between them is not very clear.

Stupidity and madness

There are several typical groups:

• something is missing in your head
• and vice versa, there is something extra
• something happened to the head, it was under the impact (hit by a dusty bag)
• descriptive idioms: the subject is unable to do something (count to three)
• ironic expression from the opposite (well, you are smart!)

Something is missing in his head

He has something upstairs wrong, the attic is out of order, be out of his mind

Bei dir fehlt’s / fehlt es wohl im Kopf! 

bei jemandem fehlt oben etwas

(oben, im Oberstübchen, im Hinterstübchen) nicht ganz richtig sein

nicht ganz klar im Dachstübchen sein

nicht (ganz) richtig im Kopf sein

nicht (recht / ganz) bei Verstand sein

bei jemandem stimmt es nicht

weder Sinn noch Verstand haben

Something is missing

nicht (mehr) alle Tassen im Schrank haben
(not (anymore) have all the cups in the cupboard)

nicht mehr alle Kekse in der Dose haben
(no longer have all the biscuits in the tin)

nicht mehr alle Nadeln an der Tanne haben
(no longer have all the needles on the fir tree)

nicht (mehr) alle Latten am Zaun haben

ein Rädchen zu viel / zu wenig haben

not in yourself (not with your senses), not all at home

sie nicht (mehr) alle haben (shorthand for the following expressions)

nicht alle Sinne beisammenhaben

nicht seine fünf / sieben Sinne beisammenhaben

nicht (mehr) bei Sinnen sein

the roof is leaking

nicht ganz dicht sein

einen Dachschaden haben

the understanding is broken, does not work (lit. little / no understanding in the head)

wenig / keinen Grips im Kopf haben

screws / casters are unscrewed, rafters are loose, bei jemandem ist ein Sparren locker

bei jemandem ist / jemand hat ein Rädchen / ein Schräubchen locker

empty head

eine geistige Null sein

Spiritually unfinished (under-illuminated). Trost – refers to spiritual religious support

He has something extra

The meaning of a large group of expressions: you were hung with something, you got it in your brains – you don’t think.

Du hast wohl einen an der Hacke! 
(You’ve probably one on the hoe!)

einen an der Waffel haben

einen an der Mütze haben

einen am Keks haben

was / etwas / einen an der Erbse haben

einen an der Birne haben

jelly (oatmeal porridge) in the head, softened brains

Sülze im Kopf haben
(have aspic in your head)

eine weiche Birne haben

sawdust in the head (straw, rafters), straw in the head, the head is stuffed with straw

Stroh im Kopf haben

Sägemehl im Kopf haben

einen Sparren haben

cockroaches in your head, be out of your mind. It used to be thought that brain problems could be caused by small animals. And animals make sounds, such as a squeak.

Bei dir piept’s / piept es wohl!

Hence the expression twirl your finger at the temple (show the bird)

Be under the impact

A large group of words and phrases arising from the connection “being beaten – not thinking well”.

kloppen – beat, pound.
matschen – knead.
knachen – pop, gnaw, crush.
Hammer – a hammer.
Knall – crackling, clapping, sound of a shot.
vernageln – nail down.
Klammerbeutel – bag of flour, fastened with a clip

drunk on ink – a person out of this world – according to the old perception of a few educated people

this is nonsense. (Panne, breakdown, here it becomes an adjective and is therefore written with a small letter, as in other expressions banane or jeck)

Other meanings

move out from the spools (from spinnen – spinning. On the one hand, yarn is associated with witchcraft, on the other hand, when spinning, a thread can be obtained in knots, a curve)
